IBM solidDB up to 6.5.0.3 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in IBM solidDB and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1208. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM solidDB. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

IBM solidDB 4.5.x before 4.5.182, 6.0.x before 6.0.1069, 6.1.x and 6.3.x before 6.3 FP8 (aka 6.3.49), and 6.5.x before 6.5 FP4 (aka 6.5.0.4) does not properly handle the (1) rpc_test_svc_readwrite and (2) rpc_test_svc_done commands, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a crafted command.

The weakness was disclosed 05/04/2011 by Tenable Network Security with Tenable Network Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1208. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53812 (IBM solidDB < 4.5.182 / 6.0.1069 / 6.3.49 / 6.5.0.4 Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119215 (IBM solidDB "rpc_test_svc" Commands Handling Denial of Service Vulnerability (swg21496106)).

Upgrading to version 6.0.1067 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11137.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67019), Tenable (53812), SecurityFocus (BID 47584†), SecurityTracker (ID 1025451†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31306†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
