Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.19 and 3.6.x before 3.6.17, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.14, does not properly use nsTreeRange data structures, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that lead to a "dangling pointer."
The weakness was published 05/07/2011 by regenrecht as Bug 630919 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0073. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68264 (Oracle Linux 4 : thunderbird (ELSA-2011-0474)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119220 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2011:0471)).
