Details
A vulnerability was found in Perl 5.10.0/5.10.1 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function telldir. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Perl 5.10.x allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) by leveraging an ability to inject arguments into a (1) getpeername, (2) readdir, (3) closedir, (4) getsockname, (5) rewinddir, (6) tell, or (7) telldir function call.
The weakness was presented 05/13/2011 by Jonathan Brossard (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0761 since 02/03/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71119 (GLSA-201311-17 : Perl: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
