Adobe Audition 3.0/3.0.1 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Adobe Audition 3.0/3.0.1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in Adobe Audition 3.0.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted Audition Session (aka .ses) file.

The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2011 by Gjoko Krstic with Zero Science Lab (Website). The advisory is shared at zeroscience.mk. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0614 since 01/20/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/16/2024).

A public exploit has been developed by LiquidWorm in Perl and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 54606 (Adobe Audition < CS5.5 Multiple SES Session File Processing Overflows (APSB11-10)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11567.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67453), Exploit-DB (17278), Tenable (54606), SecurityFocus (BID 47841†) and OSVDB (72326†). The entry VDB-57458 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
