A vulnerability was found in HP Web JetAdmin 7.x. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file devices_update_printer_fw_upload.hts. devices_update_printer_fw_upload.hts in HP Web JetAdmin 7.5.2546, when no password is set, allows remote attackers to upload arbitrary files to the printer directory.
The bug was discovered 03/24/2004. The weakness was published 03/24/2004 by wirepair (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sh0dan.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1856 since 05/04/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at sh0dan.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12062 (HP Web Jetadmin Printer Firmware Update Script Arbitrary File Upload Weakness).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at hp.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2547. In this case the pattern /plugins/hpjwja/script/devices_update_printer_fw_upload.hts is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2794.
