A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sk_add_backlog. The socket implementation in net/core/sock.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 does not properly manage a backlog of received packets, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by sending a large amount of network traffic, related to the sk_add_backlog function and the sk_rmem_alloc socket field. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2010-4251.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 05/26/2011 as Bug 657303 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4805 since 05/26/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1893 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53422 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0303)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155448 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2011-0303)).
