rendering/RenderBox.cpp in WebCore in WebKit before r86862, as used in Google Chrome before 11.0.696.71, does not properly render floats, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors that lead to a "stale pointer."
The weakness was disclosed 05/26/2011 by Martin Barbella (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trac.webkit.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1804 since 04/20/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51069 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (6887828f-0229-11e0-b84d-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119284 (Google Chrome Prior to 11.0.696.71 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 8.0.552.209 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11445.
