A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2002 (Spreadsheet Software). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Spreadsheet. Microsoft Excel 2002 SP3 and Office 2004 for Mac do not properly validate record information during parsing of Excel spreadsheets, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted spreadsheet, aka "Excel WriteAV Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 06/16/2011 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as MS11-045 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1278 since 03/04/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
