A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) (version now known). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function nsCookieService::SetCookieStringInternal of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. CRLF injection vulnerability in the nsCookieService::SetCookieStringInternal function in netwerk/cookie/nsCookieService.cpp in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.18 and 4.x through 4.0.1, and Thunderbird before 3.1.11, allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a string containing a \n (newline) character, which is not properly handled in a JavaScript "document.cookie =" expression, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-2374.
The weakness was presented 06/30/2011 as Bug 643051 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2605 since 06/30/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/13/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55404 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2011:0885)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119557 (CentOS Security Update for SeaMonkey (CESA-2011:0888)).
