A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk up to 1.6.2.0 (Communications System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file chan_sip.c of the component Channel Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. chan_sip.c in the SIP channel driver in Asterisk Open Source 1.6.x before 1.6.2.18.1 and 1.8.x before 1.8.4.3 does not properly handle \0 characters in SIP packets, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted packet.
The weakness was published 07/06/2011 by Paul with Asterisk (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at downloads.asterisk.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2529 since 06/16/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55430 (FreeBSD : Asterisk -- multiple vulnerabilities (40544e8c-9f7b-11e0-9bec-6c626dd55a41)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119356 (Asterisk Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (AST-2011-008, AST-2011-009, AST-2011-010)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
