Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9. This impacts an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in information disclosure. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2010-4655. Moreover, an exploit is present.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

net/core/ethtool.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36 does not initialize certain data structures, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel heap memory by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for an ethtool ioctl call.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2011 by Kees Cook (Website). The advisory is shared at lkml.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4655 since 01/03/2011. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1911 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55109 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1146-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155530 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.9 Kernel (ELSA-2011-0263)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (55109), SecurityFocus (BID 45972†), Secunia (SA46397†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29988†). The entries VDB-55628, VDB-56087, VDB-56542 and VDB-57522 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
