Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 6.1.0.11 (Application Server Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Administrative Console. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities in the Integrated Solutions Console (aka administrative console) in IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 7.0.0.13 and earlier allow remote attackers to hijack the authentication of administrators for requests that disable certain security options via an Edit action to console/adminSecurityDetail.do followed by a save action to console/syncworkspace.do.
The weakness was shared 07/18/2011 by Francisco Falcon with CORE Security Technologies (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3271. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 33 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86985 (IBM Websphere Application Server Administrative Console Cross-Site Request Forgery (PM36734)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (17404), SecurityFocus (BID 48305†), OSVDB (73052†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31836†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
