A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Safari up to 5.1.7 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.0, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1.
The weakness was disclosed 07/25/2012 by David Levin (Slawomir Blazek) with Chromium Development Community as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3600 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62077 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
