WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0.6 has improper libxslt security settings, which allows remote attackers to create arbitrary files, and consequently execute arbitrary code, via a crafted web site. NOTE: this may overlap CVE-2011-1425.
The weakness was released 07/21/2011 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1774. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55728 (SuSE 11.1 Security Update : libwebkit (SAT Patch Number 4917)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 3.1.0b eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12222.
