WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.0, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1.
The weakness was shared 07/25/2012 by Julien Chaffraix (SkyLined) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3604 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62077 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
