Details
A vulnerability has been found in Mega-nerd libsndfile (Audio Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in libsndfile before 1.0.25 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted PARIS Audio Format (PAF) file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 07/26/2011 by Hossein Lotfi (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hermes.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2696 since 07/11/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68310 (Oracle Linux 6 : libsndfile (ELSA-2011-1084)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155720 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libsndfile (ELSA-2011-1084)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.21 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12174.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68310), SecurityFocus (BID 48644†), Secunia (SA45125†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32470†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
