A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 5.1.7 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The weakness was released 07/25/2012 by Julien Chaffraix (SkyLined) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3608 since 06/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62077 (Apple iTunes < 10.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
