A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.2.12 (File Transfer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function chg_passwd of the component Web Administration Tool. The manipulation of the argument username with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the chg_passwd function in web/swat.c in the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) in Samba 3.x before 3.5.10 allows remote authenticated administrators to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the username parameter to the passwd program (aka the user field to the Change Password page).
The weakness was released 07/29/2011 as Bug 8289 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.samba.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2694. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
