Ruby up to 1.8.7-p21 cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Ruby up to 1.8.7-p21. Impacted is an unknown function. This manipulation causes cryptographic issue. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2011-2686. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Ruby up to 1.8.7-p21 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Ruby before 1.8.7-p352 does not reset the random seed upon forking, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to predict the values of random numbers by leveraging knowledge of the number sequence obtained in a different child process, a related issue to CVE-2003-0900. NOTE: this issue exists because of a regression during Ruby 1.8.6 development.

The weakness was published 08/05/2011 by arma as Bug 722415 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2686. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76015 (openSUSE Security Update : ruby (openSUSE-SU-2012:0228-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.8.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69032), Tenable (76015), SecurityFocus (BID 49015†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32587†). Similar entry is available at VDB-58196. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
