A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 5.1.7 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.0, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1.
The weakness was presented 07/25/2012 by Martin Barbella (Slawomir Blazek) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3636 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62077 (Apple iTunes < 10.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
