ISC DHCP up to 4.2.1 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC DHCP (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The server in ISC DHCP 3.x and 4.x before 4.2.2, 3.1-ESV before 3.1-ESV-R3, and 4.1-ESV before 4.1-ESV-R3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon exit) via a crafted BOOTP packet.

The weakness was presented 08/15/2011 as Bug 729382 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2749. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55860 (CentOS 4 / 5 : dhcp (CESA-2011:1160)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119502 (ISC DHCP Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (Deprecated)).

Upgrading to version 4.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69140), Tenable (55860), SecurityFocus (BID 49120†), SecurityTracker (ID 1025918†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32726†).
