A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function SVGTextElement.getCharNumAtPosition. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The SVGTextElement.getCharNumAtPosition function in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.20, and 4.x through 5; Thunderbird 3.x before 3.1.12 and other versions before 6; SeaMonkey 2.x before 2.3; and possibly other products does not properly handle SVG text, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that lead to a "dangling pointer."
The weakness was shared 08/18/2011 by regenrecht as Bug 648094 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0084. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75654 (openSUSE Security Update : MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2011:0958-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119512 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2011:1164)).
