A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Safari up to 5.1.7 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component WebKit. WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.0, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1.
The weakness was released 07/25/2012 by Chris Leary (Slawomir Blazek) with Mozilla as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3679 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62357 (Apple TV < 5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
