Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Interactivedata eSignal 10.6/10.6.2425. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file WinSig.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
WinSig.exe in eSignal 10.6.2425 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via (1) a long StyleTemplate element in a QUO, SUM or POR file, which triggers a stack-based buffer overflow, or (2) a long Font->FaceName field (aka FaceName element), which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was shared 09/16/2011 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3494 since 09/16/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/21/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119597 (eSignal Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12315.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69785), Exploit-DB (17837), SecurityFocus (BID 49600†), Secunia (SA45966†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33239†). The entry VDB-58528 is related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
