Wireshark 1.6.0/1.6.1 unxorFrame input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark 1.6.0/1.6.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is the function unxorFrame. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The unxorFrame function in epan/dissectors/packet-opensafety.c in the OpenSafety dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.2 does not properly validate a certain frame size, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loop and application crash) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was shared 09/20/2011 with Wireshark as Bug 6138 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3484. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61928 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : wireshark (MDVSA-2011:138)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69677), Tenable (61928), SecurityFocus (BID 49524†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33397†).
