WebKit in Apple Safari before 6.0 does not properly handle file: URLs, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended sandbox restrictions and read arbitrary files by leveraging a WebProcess compromise.
The weakness was released 07/25/2012 by Aaron Sigel (Slawomir Blazek) with vtty.com as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3697 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
