Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function GrowAtomTable. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine (ANGLE), as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.4, does not validate the return value of a GrowAtomTable function call, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger a memory-allocation error and a resulting buffer overflow.
The weakness was disclosed 09/28/2011 as Bug 680840 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3002 since 08/01/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/20/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56323 (FreeBSD : Mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (1fade8a3-e9e8-11e0-9580-4061862b8c22)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119622 (Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA-2011-36 through MFSA-2011-45)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (56323), SecurityFocus (BID 49813†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33353†).
