Sitaram Chamarty gitolite up to 1.5.9 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sitaram Chamarty gitolite. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the Admin Defined Commands (ADC) feature in gitolite before 1.5.9.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via .. (dot dot) sequences in admin-defined commands.

The weakness was disclosed 10/04/2011 by Alex (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1572 since 04/05/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79962 (GLSA-201412-09 : Multiple packages, Multiple vulnerabilities fixed in 2011), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65542), Tenable (79962) and SecurityFocus (BID 46473†). The entries VDB-38354, VDB-55173 and VDB-57640 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
