Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Adobe Photoshop Elements up to 5.0 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) .grd or (2) .abr file, a related issue to CVE-2010-1296.
The weakness was released 10/04/2011 by Gjoko Krstic with Zero Science Lab (Website). The advisory is available at zeroscience.mk. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2443. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/15/2025).
A public exploit has been developed by LiquidWorm and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
