A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component DHTML Link Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) by creating a DHTML link that uses the AnchorClick "A" object with a blank href attribute.
The weakness was shared 05/05/2003 by David F. Madrid as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-1484 since 10/24/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at usuarios.lycos.es. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
