win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly handle TrueType fonts, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted font file, aka "Win32k TrueType Font Type Translation Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 10/11/2011 as MS11-077 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2002. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56451 (MS11-077: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2567053)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90746 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-077)).
Applying the patch MS11-077 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
