The "Save for Web" selection in QuickTime Player in Apple Mac OS X through 10.6.8 exports HTML documents that contain an http link to a script file, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks by spoofing the http server during local viewing of an exported document.
The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2011 by Aaron Sigel with vtty.com (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3218. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56667 (QuickTime < 7.7.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
