IBM db2 9.7 untrusted search path

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM db2 9.7 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a untrusted search path vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-426. The product searches for critical resources using an externally-supplied search path that can point to resources that are not under the product's direct control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple untrusted search path vulnerabilities in (1) db2rspgn and (2) kbbacf1 in IBM DB2 Express Edition 9.7, as used in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2 Agent, allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse libkbb.so in the current working directory, related to the DT_RPATH ELF header.

The weakness was presented 10/17/2011 by Tim Brown with Brown (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4061 since 10/15/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59904 (IBM DB2 9.7 < Fix Pack 6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119404 (IBM DB2 "DT_RPATH" Insecure Library Loading Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability).

A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (59904) and SecurityFocus (BID 48514†). See VDB-61036 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
