Puppetlabs Puppet up to 2.7.3 key path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Puppetlabs Puppet up to 2.7.3 (Service Management Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument key with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Puppet 2.6.x before 2.6.10 and 2.7.x before 2.7.4 allows remote attackers to write X.509 Certificate Signing Request (CSR) to arbitrary locations via (1) a double-encoded key parameter in the URI in 2.7.x, (2) the CN in the Subject of a CSR in 2.6 and 0.25.

The weakness was presented 10/27/2011 by Kristian Erik Hermansen (Website). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3848. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75715 (openSUSE Security Update : puppet (openSUSE-SU-2011:1288-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 2.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (70227), Tenable (75715), SecurityFocus (BID 49860†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33500†). See VDB-59231, VDB-59230 and VDB-59229 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
