A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Pidgin libpurple up to 2.7.2 (Messaging Software). Affected is the function g_markup_escape_text. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The g_markup_escape_text function in the SILC protocol plug-in in libpurple 2.10.0 and earlier, as used in Pidgin and possibly other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via invalid UTF-8 sequences that trigger use of invalid pointers and an out-of-bounds read, related to interactions with certain versions of glib2.
The weakness was disclosed 11/04/2011 as Bug 743481 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-3594 since 09/21/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74523 (openSUSE Security Update : pidgin (openSUSE-2011-35)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195204 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Pidgin Vulnerabilities (USN-1273-1)).
