A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.53 (Web Server). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ap_pregsub of the component mod_setenvif. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Integer overflow in the ap_pregsub function in server/util.c in the Apache HTTP Server 2.0.x through 2.0.64 and 2.2.x through 2.2.21, when the mod_setenvif module is enabled, allows local users to gain privileges via a .htaccess file with a crafted SetEnvIf directive, in conjunction with a crafted HTTP request header, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 11/08/2011 by halfdog as Bug 750935 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3607 since 09/21/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
