A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Visio and Visio Viewer up to 2010 SP1 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part. The weakness was released 08/14/2012 by Alexander Gavrun with Zero Day Initiative as MS12-059 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1888 since 03/22/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61534 (MS12-059: Buffer Overflow in Microsoft Visio and Visio Viewer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2733918)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110189 (Microsoft Visio and Visio Viewer 2010 Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-059)).
Applying the patch MS12-059 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
