A vulnerability was found in Novell NetWare 6.5 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function xdrDecodeString. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the xdrDecodeString function in XNFS.NLM in Novell NetWare 6.5 SP8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (abend or NFS outage) via long packets.
The weakness was presented 11/29/2011 by Francis Provencher with Protek Research Lab's as Bug 702491 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.novell.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-4191 since 10/25/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
