Widelands up to 15 Filesystem path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Widelands up to 15 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Filesystem. Such manipulation leads to path traversal. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2011-4675. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Widelands up to 15. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The pathname canonicalization functionality in io/filesystem/filesystem.cc in Widelands before 15.1 expands leading ~ (tilde) characters to home-directory pathnames but does not restrict use of these characters in strings received from the network, which might allow remote attackers to conduct absolute path traversal attacks and overwrite arbitrary files via a ~ in a pathname that is used for a file transfer in an Internet game, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-1932.

The weakness was presented 12/05/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bazaar.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-4675 since 12/04/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

Upgrading to version 9.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (71626). See VDB-59581 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
