The DCOM RPC interface for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 allows remote attackers to cause network communications via an "alter context" call that contains additional data, aka the "Object Identity Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 04/13/2004 by Todd Sabin with BindView as MS04-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0124 since 02/03/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/24/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12206 (MS04-012: Microsoft Hotfix (credentialed check) (828741)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68528 (Multiple Microsoft Windows RPC/DCOM Vulnerabilities (MS04-012)).
