A vulnerability was found in Zabbix up to 1.8.9 (Network Management Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file hostgroups.php. The manipulation of the argument gname with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Zabbix before 1.8.10 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the gname parameter (aka host groups name) to (1) hostgroups.php and (2) usergrps.php, the update action to (3) hosts.php and (4) scripts.php, and (5) maintenance.php.
The weakness was disclosed 12/29/2011 by Martin (Website). The advisory is shared at support.zabbix.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4615 since 11/29/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:hostgroups.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57451 (Fedora 15 : zabbix-1.8.10-1.fc15 (2011-17559)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
