The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4643. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Splunk (Log Management Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in Splunk 4.x before 4.2.5 allow remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a URI to (1) Splunk Web or (2) the Splunkd HTTP Server, aka SPL-45243.
The weakness was shared 01/03/2012 by Gary O'Leary-Steele (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4643 since 11/30/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Gary O'Leary-Steele and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12546 (Splunk Prior to 4.2.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SP-CAAAGMM)).
Upgrading to version 4.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72244), Exploit-DB (18245), SecurityFocus (BID 78382†), OSVDB (77695†) and Secunia (SA47232†). The entries VDB-59871, VDB-59870 and VDB-59868 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
