Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in MaraDNS up to 0.7.01. Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The authoritative server in MaraDNS through 2.0.04 computes hash values for DNS data without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which might allow local users to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted records in zone files, a different vulnerability than CVE-2012-0024.
The weakness was presented 01/07/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at samiam.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-5056 since 01/07/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73482 (MaraDNS 2.0.x < 2.0.05 Hash Collision Zone File Record Local DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
