Ntrglobal NTR ActiveX control up to 1.1.7 ActiveX Control lModule input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Ntrglobal NTR ActiveX control up to 1.1.7. Affected is some unknown processing of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation of the argument lModule with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The StopModule method in the NTR ActiveX control before 2.0.4.8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted lModule parameter that triggers use of an arbitrary memory address as a function pointer.

The weakness was published 01/14/2012 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0267 since 12/30/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/08/2025).

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 10 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57556 (NTR ActiveX Control < 2.0.4.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 1.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72295), Exploit-DB (21839), Tenable (57556), SecurityFocus (BID 51374†) and OSVDB (78253†). Similar entry is available at VDB-59939. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
