The mem_write function in Linux kernel 2.6.39 and other versions, when ASLR is disabled, does not properly check permissions when writing to /proc/<pid>/mem, which allows local users to gain privileges by modifying process memory, as demonstrated by Mempodipper.

The issue has been introduced in 05/18/2011. The weakness was shared 01/27/2012 by zx2c4 as Bug 782642 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0056 since 12/07/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by zx2c4 in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 254 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68435 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2012-0052)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195250 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-Ti-Omap4 Vulnerabilities (USN-1364-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
