Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Oracle Java JRE and JDK 6 Update 34/7 Update 6 (Programming Language Software). Affected is the function getField of the component SunToolkit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 Update 6 and earlier, and 6 Update 34 and earlier, has no impact and remote attack vectors involving AWT and "a security-in-depth issue that is not directly exploitable but which can be used to aggravate security vulnerabilities that can be directly exploited." NOTE: this identifier was assigned by the Oracle CNA, but CVE is not intended to cover defense-in-depth issues that are only exposed by the presence of other vulnerabilities. NOTE: Oracle has not commented on claims from a downstream vendor that this issue is related to "toolkit internals references."
The issue has been introduced in 08/14/2012. The weakness was published 08/10/2012 by James Forshaw with Security Explorations (Website). The advisory is available at security.gentoo.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0547 since 01/11/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/26/2024). This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.
A public exploit has been developed by metasploit in Ruby and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 130 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. A worm is spreading, which is automatically exploiting this vulnerability. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68611 (Oracle Linux 6 : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ELSA-2012-1223)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120443 (Oracle Java Runtime Environment Remote Code Execution Vulnerability). This is currently being actively exploited in targeted attacks.
Upgrading to version 6 Update 35 or 7 Update 7 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Microsoft Silverlight or Adobe Flash as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77972), Exploit-DB (20865), Tenable (68611), SecurityFocus (BID 55213†) and OSVDB (84980†).
