FreeBSD 10 geli cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in FreeBSD 10 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component geli. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The geli encryption provider 7 before r239184 on FreeBSD 10 uses a weak Master Key, which makes it easier for local users to defeat a cryptographic protection mechanism via a brute-force attack.

The weakness was published 08/20/2012 by Fabian Keil as geli weak master key generation on -CURRENT as confirmed posting (FreeBSD Security Mailing List). The advisory is available at lists.freebsd.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4578 since 08/21/2012. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The issue is triggered when the program uses weak Master Key encryption, which may allow a local attacker to defeat the cryptographic protection mechanism via a brute-force attack.

One can verify if its provider was created with weak keys by running: "geli dump [provider] | grep version".

Upgrading to version geli 7 r239184 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78057) and OSVDB (84979†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
