Mozilla Firefox before 15.0 does not properly restrict navigation to the about:newtab page, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges via a crafted web site that triggers creation of a new tab and then a new window.

The weakness was shared 08/28/2012 by Mariusz Mlynski (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA 2012-60 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. Once about:newtab is loaded, the special context can potentially be used to escalate privilege, allowing for arbitrary code execution on the local system in a maliciously crafted attack. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3965 since 07/11/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 803017 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120451 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird/SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2012-57 through MFSA 2012-73)).

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
