A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 14 on Windows (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. Untrusted search path vulnerability in the installer in Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, Thunderbird before 15.0, and Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.7 on Windows allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse executable file in a root directory.
The weakness was released 08/28/2012 by Masato Kinugawa as MFSA 2012-67 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3974 since 07/11/2012. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. If a crafted executable is placed in the root partition on a Windows file system, the Firefox and Thunderbird installer will launch this program after a standard installation instead of Firefox or Thunderbird, running this program with the user's privileges.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 803015 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121143 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2.5 Missing).
Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
