A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 14 on Android (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function dump of the component __android_log_print. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Mozilla Firefox before 15.0 on Android does not properly implement unspecified callers of the __android_log_print function, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web page that calls the JavaScript dump function.
The weakness was published 08/28/2012 by Blake Kaplan (vsemozhetbyt) with Mozilla as MFSA 2012-71 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3979 since 07/11/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. This vulnerability only affects Firefox for Android.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61741 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2b8cad90-f289-11e1-a215-14dae9ebcf89)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165433 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2012:1167-1)).
Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
